Vegan

There are many people these days who no longer feel that eating animals, or using any products derived form animals is right of healthy. These people are usually referred to as vegetarians or vegans, but don't confuse the two.

Vegetarians will cut out meat fro their diets, but still eat animal derived products such as milk or cheese: vegans will eat no animals or animal products. Both of these diets will involve special foods to make up for the loss of meat protein, but are viable alternatives to the usual modern diet.

Vegetarian Dieting

Vegetarians are people who choose to remove some or all meat or dairy products from their diets. Many casual vegetarians cut out products such as red meat, pork and chicken while continuing to consume eggs, milk and fish. More serious vegetarians cut out all kinds of meat, including even shellfish. Rather than eat meat, vegetarians base their health around consuming a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and bread products. As stated earlier, a large number of vegetarians continue to consume dairy products and even some fish or poultry.

Vegetarianism is a great way to lose weight. Fruits, vegetables and whole-grain products contain fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and tons of other nutrients that are useful to the body. These products are extremely low in fat and are absorbed and digested easily by the body, which promotes rapid weight loss in conjunction with regular exercise. Semi-vegetarians who continue eating some meat products don't need to go out of their way to continue getting adequate amounts of protein. Hardcore vegetarians can take protein supplements or use soy protein, a type of protein derived from soy beans.

People have different reasons for becoming vegetarians. Some people start vegetarian diets in an effort to lose weight, lower their cholesterol or achieve better overall health. Some people become vegetarians because they believe people shouldn't be so reliant on animals for food. Others may become vegetarians for their own spiritual or religious reasons. Whatever the reason, vegetarian diets have been studied and approved by many leading nutritionists.

Vegetarianism should not be confused with veganism. Vegetarianism allows for flexibility among people who may want to consume certain meat products, such as eggs or fish. However, vegans don't believe in consuming any animal products; this means anything containing an animal product as an ingredient is off limits. Many of the non-meat foods we eat include animal products such as milk, eggs or grease. Vegans usually take vitamins and dietary supplements to avoid becoming malnourished.

There are many Web sites available to help people learn the principles behind veganism; once learned, practitioners can begin to build their own diet plans. However, newly proclaimed vegans can miss out on many key nutrients if they switch their diet without studying. Foods containing animal products are often rich in calcium, iodine, vitamin B12 and vitamin D. To make up for losing these key nutrients, many vegans resort to using dietary supplements to avoid becoming malnourished.

Vegan Ethics

Veganism sprung from the ethical question of whether it's appropriate for humans to hunt and harvest animals to survive, particularly if doing so is unnecessary. Vegans believe that animals should be protected by the same ethical and moral codes that humans use in protecting themselves. Removing animal products from their diet and lifestyle is how vegans demonstrate their beliefs about human and animal life.

That said, many people who become vegans do so mainly to lose weight or get in shape. With the proper planning and use of supplements, vegans can consume all of the necessary nutrients while enjoying a low- to nonfat diet.
