Bladder Control Treatments
Most bladder control remedies vary from exercise, to medication to, as a last resort, surgery. As a bladder control remedy, surgery is only for people with severe problems that can't be resolved with any of the other bladder control remedies.
Some of the natural bladder control remedies would be:
- Behavior modifications. This involves lowering fluid consumption and the time you might drink fluids.
- Bladder Training. This involves holding your urination, starting at maybe ten minutes and building up form there.
- Double Voiding. This mans that after urinating, you wait a few minutes, and then try again.
- Scheduling Bathroom breaks. We may recommend you make out a schedule for your bathroom trips. This way you have a set time to urinate everyday and can better control your bladder functions.
- Floor Exercises. Also called Kegel exercises, these are designed to strengthen your pelvic muscles and urinary sphincter. These muscles are crucial to hold urine even if the bladder muscles contract involuntary. We can recommend a therapist to help you learn and practice these exercises. We have found these exercises to be an effective bladder control remedy, but it doesn't work for all people.
- Absorbent pads or underwear. These are to avoid any accidents just in case.
Bladder Control Remedies: Medications
Drugs as a bladder control remedy have a long history, including the castor oil some used to take as a way of fixing bladder and colon problems. Most medications taken as bladder control remedies are aimed at alleviating the symptoms of overactive bladder and frequent urination. These bladder control remedies are:
Tolterodine (Detrol), oxybutynin (Ditropan), an oxybutynin skin patch (Oxytrol), trospium (Sanctura), solifenacin (Vesicare) and darifenacin (Enablex).
These are usually prescribed with the behavioral changes and more natural bladder control remedies previously talked about.
Surgery. As mentioned, surgery is pretty much a last resort as a bladder control remedy. The goal of surgery as a bladder control remedy is to increase the bladder capacity, and reduce the pressure on the bladder itself.
Removal of the bladder itself. The true last resort as a bladder control remedy. The procedure involves removing the bladder and replacing it with a surgical replacement or an opening to the outside to which a bag is connected to collected urine.
