Hybrid SUV Reviews

We've collected the stats and gone over dozens of different reviews, distilling them into the main points you'll need to know. The trick for buying a hybrid SUV, or any hybrid really, is to look at the gas mileage in comparison to the price. Just because it's a hybrid, doesn't mean you'll make up the sticker price in lower gas usage, even if you drive it for a considerable length of time. Some of the SUV hybrids are expensive enough that the savings in gas doesn't make much of a difference.

As with any automobile purchase, you should consult different dealerships, find which is offering the best deals in upfront savings, dealership rebates (if there's a factory rebate, how long does it take and how many hoops are there to jump through) and don't be afraid to haggle. The salesmen expect it, and you owe it to yourself, and your wallet, to get the price best on the car you want. Don't afraid to walk if the deal is not to your satisfaction, remembering to let the salesmen know you're going to another dealership. Remember though, the dealer has to make a profit as well.

Know what you need, what you want, and what you can settle for. Remember, if this car isn't the deal you need, there will be another one. Good hunting!

Lexus RX 450h

MSRP: $43,935 - $45,525
Invoice: $39,980 - $41,426
Avg. Paid: $41,421 - $43,011
MPG: 32 City / 28 Hwy

It's a Lexus, so don't even bother looking at the price if you can't afford a regular Lexus. It's a nice one, but not a hit-it-out-of-the-park one. The handling is nice, interior and exterior gave us no complaints, usually Lexus quality. Overall, we rated this one an 8.5 on our 10 point scale. Not bad Lexus.

Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid

MSRP: $50,735 - $53,540
Invoice: $47,945 - $50,595
Avg. Paid: $48,833 - $51,468
MPG: 20 City / 23 Hwy

The Chevy Tahoe hybrid didn't get nearly the press that the Volt did, and it's more expensive by around 10 grand, but it an SUV, and a good one at that. It comes near the styling of the Lexus, but loses points on the gas mileage. Sure, it's a monster, more truck than SUV, but for a hybrid

Yukon Hybrid

Avg. Paid: $50,097 - $59,711
MSRP: $51,200 - $61,360
Invoice: $48,384 - $57,985
MPG: 20 City / 23 Hwy

A very nice package, the 2011 GMC Yukon, but not cheap. It can haul just about any crowd you want, but like we said, not cheap.

The Good: fuel economy is great, as you would expect, you can tow with it, even nicer and the cabin is high tech and quality.

The Not So Good: Like we said high cost. This will be made up over time as the initial cost is made up in saved fuel cost. The third row in not the greatest, most of our reviewers found it uncomfortable.

Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Avg. Paid: $37,142 - $42,613
MSRP: $37,490 - $43,145
Invoice: $34,488 - $39,475
MPG: 28 City / 28 Hwy

The Good: Quiet ride with a seamless hybrid powertrain

The Not So Good: Very pricey, and the gas saving probably won't cover it.

Ford Escape Hybrid

Avg. Paid: $31,949 - $34,406
MSRP: $31,795 - $34,305
Invoice: $29,519 - $31,802
MPG: 30 City / 27 Hwy

The Good: Better fuel economy than any other hybrid, Smooth power train.

The Not So Good: Pricy, very pricey for its class, rear seats not as useful as competitors.

Cadillac Escalade Hybrid

Avg. Paid: $72,400 - $86,736
MSRP: $73,840 - $88,140
Invoice: $69,040 - $82,411
MPG: 20 City / 23 Hwy

Yes! You can be green and be cool! The Cadillac Escalade is the beach mark for the luxury SUVs, and now it's a hybrid.

The Good: Same cool Escalade style, luxury interior, really long list of standards, better gas mileage for regular Escalade.

The Not So Good: Gas saving won't cover the actual cost. Third row seat doesn't go flat for some reason.

If you need an SUV, and want to go greener, than a hybrid SUV might well be the car for you.
