Midsize SUV Reviews

The midsize SUV has been a popular choice in the past: less ostentatious that the full-sized or luxury models, but has a bit more space, wider wheel stance and cable of hauling more cargo. In the past, as well as this year, the ford Explorer leads the way in popularity and with the critics.

These reviews have been gathered and distilled from a dozen different reviews. Of course, what we like might not be what you like. Use these as a guide to what SUVs you might be interested in and drive them for yourself.

Of course you should sit down and decide what it is you need from an SUV, what it is you want, what's a deal breaker and what you can live with. Once you decide that, choosing an new car will be much easier.

Here are our recommendations.

Ford Explorer

Avg. Paid:$28,044 - $38,562
MSRP: $28,190 - $39,190
Invoice: $26,730 - $36,458
MPG: 17 City / 25 Hwy

All-new for 2011, reviewers say that the Ford Explorer finally has what it takes to compete with the best midsize SUVs and crossovers on the market, naming it the 2011 North American Truck of the Year. Improved fuel economy, adept performance and a comfortable interior once again make the Ford Explorer a great choice for a family vehicle.

While Edmunds says the 2011 Explorer "is much more in tune with what today's crossover shoppers are looking for," it's not without its hurdles. The biggest one is the competition. "Ford's re-imagined Explorer is a very nice 7-passenger crossover that, unfortunately, is in competition with a lot of other very nice 7-passenger crossovers," says Consumer Guide. Still, like most reviewers, Consumer Guide concludes that the 2011 Explorer is "both competent on-road and more capable off-road than most in this class… Overall, it strikes a good balance between the rugged character of its predecessor and the car-like dynamics of a modern crossover. If that's what you're looking for in an SUV, Ford has you covered." One big complaint is that it's at the price for its class.

Mazda CX-9

Avg. Paid:$27,703 - $32,841
MSRP: $29,135 - $34,535
Invoice: $26,983 - $31,981
MPG: 17 City / 24 Hwy

Most reviewers say the 2011 Mazda CX-9 should be the crossover of choice for people who need a midsize SUV that can seat seven, but also want something that's fun to drive. Decent fuel economy and a comfortable interior are just icing on the cake.

The major downside to the CX-9 is its price: even among seven-seat SUVs, it's a little high. But, for the money you get standard Bluetooth and remote keyless entry. Plus, many reviewers say the CX-9's interior is nicer and more comfortable than the competition. And, of course, you get the CX-9's great driving experience. If you don't want to give up having fun behind the wheel just because you've gained some passengers, the Mazda CX-9 is worth the extra money.

Buick Enclave

Avg. Paid:$35,408 - $43,894
MSRP: $35,615 - $44,095
Invoice: $33,834 - $41,890
MPG: 17 City / 24 Hwy

The 2011 Buick Enclave's upscale interior, smooth ride and stylish looks put it almost on par with some luxury SUVs, but don't expect it to handle like a car.

The Enclave shares a platform with the popular Chevy Traverse and GMC Acadia, but commands a price premium over both. Starting at just over $35,000, it's actually one of the more expensive options among Affordable Midsize SUVs. But most luxury-minded buyers will find that it's worth it.

The Enclave features one of the most luxurious and quiet interiors in its class. Seating for seven makes it a practical family hauler. "This crossover builds on the strengths of its more mainstream cousins by offering tangible upgrades in luxury and style," explains Consumer Guide. In fact, Buick likens the experience of sitting in an Enclave to a private jet.

The only downsides to owning an Enclave are that V8 power is unavailable and fuel economy is average -- 17/24 mpg city/highway. But if you can live those minor drawbacks, the Enclave is a winner.

Dodge Durango

Avg. Paid:$28,561 - $42,569
MSRP: $29,195 - $43,795
Invoice: $27,737 - $41,133
MPG: 16 City / 23 Hwy

The Dodge Durango used to be the kind of family SUV people bought because it usually came with a deep discount. Reviewers say the 2011 Dodge Durango, which is all new, changes that. "Dodge's revamped Durango brings style and comfort to the 7-seat crossover segment," says Consumer Guide. "Availability of a V8 engine is unique to the class. Its ride and handling balance is also surprisingly good." In short, car reviewers agree that the Durango is back, and is better than before.

Inside, reviewers say the Durango matches or exceeds what the competition offers. There is seating for up to seven in three rows, and some reviewers even say that the third row is adult friendly, though others disagree. Cabin materials are also very good for the Durango's $29,195 base price, and a few reviewers say that the interior design and construction are better than what's in competing family SUVs from Chevy and Ford.

Chevrolet Traverse

Avg. Paid:$29,055 - $39,704
MSRP: $29,224 - $40,105
Invoice: $27,763 - $38,100
MPG: 17 City / 24 Hwy

The 2011 Chevrolet Traverse, like most affordable midsize SUVs, is a crossover that's all about getting large families around town in style. With a distinctive exterior, roomy and modern interior, as well as performance and fuel economy that are excellent for its size, the Traverse makes a good choice for anyone who needs space and practicality, but just can't bear the thought of driving a minivan.

"There is a plethora of crossover SUVs to choose from today and they come in all sizes," says MSN. "If you regularly tote around six or seven passengers, occasionally load plywood sheets or tow up to 5,200 pounds, the Traverse should be added to your shopping list."

The 2011 Chevrolet Traverse was named The Best Midsize Crossover for the Money by U.S. News and World Report and TrueCar.com.
